The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs' Latine Heritage Month planning committee is thrilled to announce an exciting and educational calendar of programming at the University of Michigan this fall. The month's theme, "Corriente: La felicidad es mi resistencia" / "Coming thru: Happiness is my resistance," emphasizes the importance of Latine joy in collective resistance. Events are planned and organized by student organizations and units across campus.
Latine Heritage Month is the U-M's month-long celebration of Latine/a/o/x people, cultures, and contributions, taking place mid September through mid October. It coincides with National Hispanic American Heritage Month, celebrated nationally from September 15 - October 15. Over the years, people of Latin American heritage have identified themselves and have been identified by others in various ways. MESA believes in the wisdom and inclusive vision of our students, who have informed the transition to identify this month as Latine Heritage Month moving forward.
Campus will host a variety of community gatherings, music and performances, public talks, and opportunities for delicious food. Events include the month's opening ceremony, a carillon recital, a conversation with Sandra Cisneros, La Unión, Don José Martí Open Mic Night, a look at voters and voting, and the Día de los Muertos Ball.
