About
Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AA&PI Heritage Month) is a university-wide celebration of the Asian American & Pacific Islander communities. While the month is federally recognized in May, the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA), the United Asian American Student Organizations (UAAO), and the Oceanic Student Association (OSA) celebrate the month from mid-March to mid-April, with a diverse range of events that honor AA&PI histories, heritages, communities, and identities. To celebrate the Pacific Islander (or Oceanian) community, we also host PI Heritage Week dedicated to the histories, heritages, communities, and identities of the Oceanian community.
Throughout the month, events will be added to the list of events below so please check back often for updates. All are invited to join us! For more information on AA&PI Heritage Month and regular updates, follow us on the AA&PI Heritage Month Instagram!
Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2023 calendar
This year our theme is Generational Change and Healing. Our Planning Committee selected this theme after conversations around wanting to build toward unity and increase self-awareness within our communities. The historical resilience of both the Asian American and Oceanian communities are clear and, despite the violence we have faced and continue to face, we choose instead to center our healing. Our communities often draw from inherited knowledge and wisdom, invoking inspiration and a push for change in the younger generations and generations to come. This heritage month, we hope to reinforce our healing by hosting events and conversations that build, uplift, and challenge our communities.
Please note that Pacific Islander Heritage Week will take place during the week of April 9th. See details below!

Friday, March 24th | 2:00 - 4:00 PM ET | Register HERE
UMMA Auditorium, 525 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48109
Ma and Me: A Memoir can be described as an excellent interwoven story of the refugee experience, the Americanization of immigrant children, tension and drama between mother and daughter’s cultural expectations, the lingering effects of war, and the pursuit of the American dream. With a journalist’s eye and a creative writer’s heart, Cambodian-American journalist Putsata Reang has crafted a memorable narrative with poignant lines, rare clarity, and lyrical wisdom. Her story reflects the long legacy of inherited trauma, as well as the crushing weight of cultural and filial duty carried by many immigrants and refugees as they navigate transnational, first-gen, queer, and ethnic and racial identities in the US.
Please join us for this conversation with Putsata Reang in the Helmut Stern Auditorium, UMMA on Friday, Mar 24, 2023. Time: 2:00 - 4:00 PM (Door opens at 1:30 PM and Book Signing is at 3:30 PM)

Free Taiwanese Film Screening: A Letter to A’ma
Friday, April 7th | 6:30 - 9:00 PM ET
Rackham Graduate School, 915 E Washington St, Ann Arbor, MI 48109
This MTSA event is co-host with Formosa Forward and co-organize with Taiwanese Student Association at MSU and Ann Arbor Taiwanese Association. This event consists of two components: film screening and a Q&A session.
A Letter to A’ma culminates a decade’s endeavors of community-engaged art, in which a group of Taiwanese artists, led by Director Chen Hui-ling, traced their family stories by turning to Elders’ knowledge, oral history, and arts. Precipitated by the passing of the Director’s own grandmother (A’ma), this project made possible a journey of intergenerational storytelling, tapped into Taiwan’s collective memory from the past and present, and reshaped the island’s own identity through the retelling in the documentary.
Through the film screening and the subsequent Q&A session with Director Chen, this event will showcase Taiwan’s contemporary art practice as it relates to the recording and retelling of public history. In doing so, we aim to introduce the island’s rich cultural heritage and artistic praxis, especially those with the transformative potential to break down boundaries–generational, national, and cultural all at once.
A Letter to A’ma won the Gold Award at Women Make Waves International Film Festival and Best Documentary Feature at Les Rimbaud du Cinéma. It was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.

GenAPA Culture Show
Saturday, April 8th | 7:00 - 8:30 PM ET
Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, 911 N University Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48109
GenAPA, a UAAO-affiliated culture show, has been a proud tradition on the University of Michigan campus since 1995. As one of the largest student-run pan-Asian cultural programs in the nation, GenAPA consistently attracts nearly 200 performers along with a culturally diverse audience of over 500 people. It showcases the unity and strength of the Asian/Pacific Islander American community by alluding to the past while collectively moving the whole community into the future. Promoting cultural diversity through tradition and history remains intrinsic to the core values of GenAPA. Each year it strives to improve its program while preserving the cultural foundation upon which it was built.
Generation Asian Pacific American (GenAPA) is proud to present our 27th show this year. Our theme this year is Invigorate, which we feel captures the state of the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) community. With an upswing of Asian hate crimes amidst our efforts for activism, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and hopeless in the face of stagnation. It may be difficult to gather the energy to continue our fight, but we believe that by remembering the progress we’ve made so far and how far we’ve come from the beginning of our movement, people will be re-energized. Invigorate to us means to breathe new life into our movement and re-energize members to continue fighting. As such, we want everyone to“reflect on yesterday, and pursue your tomorrow”. Through the show, we want to increase visibility for the APIA community and give them an opportunity to showcase their achievements. When we hold auditions, we invite all APIA performance groups on campus and any individuals part of the community who are interested, so we can showcase the diversity within the APIA community. Outside of the show, we strive to educate the general student population about APIA issues by inviting guest performers to our show and holding workshops leading up to the show. GenAPA is working with Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAAJ) this year, and we’ve donated to worthwhile causes such as tsunami relief in the past.
