Opera Workshop/Discussion: THE BLACK CLOWN

Based on the dramatic monologue by Langston Hughes.

Schachter’s new vaudeville oratorio for the American Repertory Theater features the unique, genre-crossing work of rising bass-baritone Davóne Tines, who will be joined by SMTD vocal majors and pianist Steven McGhee under the musical direction of Kathleen Kelly for this first hearing of the vocal score.

In addition to the workshop performance, there are a few other ancillary events that may be of interest:

— on Thursday, September 14, Davóne Tines will lead a storytelling/talkback session on Hughes' work and its resonances in contemporary American society (5-7pm, Moore Building, Rm. 2038)

— earlier on Friday, September 15, Davóne Tines, Ryan McKittrick (the ART's director of artistic programs) and I will give a panel discussion on the development of our project, hosted by Mark Clague and Jonathan Kuuskoski (12pmMoore Building, EXCEL office)

— on Saturday, September 16Davóne Tines will give a master class with the department of voice (11am, Moore Building, McIntosh Theatre)
