Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs

The ALMA (Assisting Latin@s to Maximize Achievement) Program, is a partnership between MESA and the ALMA student organization.  The ALMA Program is an orientation and year-long peer-to-peer mentorship program for incoming students providing a unique opportunity to build community, learn skills and knowledge of campus resources vital to the first year experience.  The program provides a safe space for individuals to develop and further explore their identities, while also taking part in discussions on topics


This years ALMA Orientation 2017 will take place Wednesday August 30th through Saturday September 2nd. During the orientation, students will get the chance to build their network and community by meeting with students, faculty and staff. The orientation will provide students the opportunity to learn about important campus resources while also learning valuable experiences from peers of what it takes to be successful as an incoming student at the University of Michigan.  Through fun activities and dialogues, students get to learn important skills, and explore topics of identity, and social justice relating to the Latinx experience, while also providing social support.

Our mentorship program focuses on peer-to-peer interaction that provide academic and social support available to all incoming students.  These interactions include opportunities to engage with other students in the program through fun activities which further provide community building and important skill development that will assist in the academic success and retention of students within the program.

Some Program Expectations

  • Attend monthly events to learn about resources and to further build your community through social events

  • Meet in person your Mentor/Mentee a minimum of once a month

  • Complete program evaluations (i.e. surveys, mid-semester evaluations, video testimonials, etc.)
