"Shades of Experience" - 2013 Black History Month Calendar of Events

Shades of Experience flier

The 2013 “Shades of Experience” reflects this mission by celebrating the rich diversity within the African diaspora and challenging the notion of a singular Black experience.   The calendar features photographs submitted by U-M students and staff that self-identify with Black/African American heritage.  The 2013 BHM calendar also highlights multiple events from LS&A’s Race Theme Semester programming.  More information about the Understanding Race Project can be found at www.lsa.umich.edu/themesemester.

MESA/Trotter’s BHM Committee will continue accepting proposals for funding on a rolling basis throughout February.  For more information about BHM programs or to apply for funding, please contact Jaimée Marsh at jaimeem@umich.edu or call 734-763-9044.

Apply Today for the 2013 Black History Month Committee

The University of Michigan's Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) is currently seeking students to serve on the committee for our university-wide celebration of Black History Month (BHM).  While Black History Month traditionally celebrates the achievements of African Americans, we believe it’s also an occasion to celebrate multiculturalism and all people of color.  In this case, we would like Black History Month to serve as a space to build coalitions between communities of color and highlight social justice issues that are significant across communities.

By joining the committee, you commit to attend two meetings (potentially three meetings if needed) where you would help select the theme of the month and contribute ideas to the BHM calendar.  Committee members will also review funding proposals from other organizations to determine how funding is distributed to various BHM events.

If you are interested in being a part of the 2013 Black History Month Planning Committee, please complete the application form by Thursday, January 24th.

Additionally, if your organization has any events you would like added to the campus-wide 2013 Black History Month calendar please submit your proposed event by Thursday, January 24th.

Funding for Black History Month related programs is available upon request.  Please see the Black History Month Program Proposal site to apply.

For questions about Black History Month programming or committee applications, please contact the Multicultural Development Program Manager, Jaimee Marsh, at jaimeem@umich.edu.
