Are you someone that is interested in learning more about Asian/Pacific-Islander American (A/PIA) issues? Do you LOVEmeeting people from all over the country? Do you want to see some AMAZING keynote speakers and performers? If you said yes to any of the above points, then you NEED to register for:
Midwest Asian American Students Union Spring Conference 2013 (MAASU SC 2013) @ The University of Michigan April 5-6th!!!
If you are wondering what MAASU is, here is a little explanation. MAASU is a national non-profit organization that was established to promote awareness and discussion of A/PIA issues as well as networking amongst students from all over the Midwest. Every spring, one of the over 30 MAASU Member Schools hosts the MAASU Spring Conference, the LARGEST student-run A/PIA conference in the Midwest. This event attracts nearly 1000 STUDENTS every year. This year, we have the incredible honor of hosting this amazing event right here at the University of Michigan!
The theme for our conference this year is: MAGNIFY: Explore Yourself, AMPLIFY: Inspire Others. Through this conference, we want attendees to look deeper into their own identities as well as what it means to be A/PIA. Once a sense of identity is established, we want attendees to use the tools that they will gain from our conference in order to inspire others and make a difference once they return to their respective communities.
The current registration fee for University of Michigan students is only $45 if you register before March 17th. Register now @ http://tinyurl.com/byvnv2o!!!
Here is what you should expect at the conference:
Friday, April 5th (Evening)
On Friday night, we will kick off the conference with a lively Night Market. At this event, we will allow early arriving students to check-in for the conference as well as socialize with other attendees in a very casual setting. The Night Market will include fun games, delicious foods, as well as many great performances by fellow peers.
Saturday, April 6th (All Day)
Saturday is when the conference will officially get started. In the morning, we will be having an Opening Ceremony and opening keynote speech held at the Rackham Auditorium. At the opening ceremony, you will once again be able to check-in for the conference. Afterwards, you will all go to your respective small groups. Small groups, as the name indicates, are smaller groups consisting of 15-20 students each from all different schools. Throughout the day, you will be attending 3 workshop sessions with your small groups as well as engaging in insightful discussions about the workshop contents with them. If you ask anyone who has attended a MAASU SC, they will tell you that they made lasting friendships with small group members.
As for workshops, we will be offering OVER 50 DIFFERENT workshops for participants to attend. These workshops cover SEVENcategories: "Redefining A/PIA," "History and Today," "Self Help as an A/PIA (Professional Development Help)," "Entertainment and Media," "Gender and Sexuality Studies," "Activism 101," and "Utilizing Your Knowledge." No matter which workshops you attend, you are DEFINITELY going to walk out with so much knowledge and insight.
After all the workshop and small group sessions, the conference will conclude with an Elegant Formal Banquet held at theDIAMOND CENTER in NOVI, Michigan. At the banquet, attendees will be served a DELICIOUS dinner in addition to some VERY, VERY talented performances. We have invited WELL-KNOWN A/PIA performers from all over the country as well as U of M student performers to showcase their talents. Transportation will be provided to the banquet for anyone in need of a ride.
So with all of that being said, YOU definitely should REGISTER for this amazing event! If you do not attend this year, it may not come back to the University of Michigan for another 4 YEARS!
P.S. We’re still looking for more volunteers! Sign up with your friends and help us make the conference AMAZING! You will get priority seating at the banquet if you register and volunteering, so you can have a great time with your friends as a volunteer.
